Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about finding the right generator, solar integration, or maintenance? We've compiled answers to the most common questions we receive to help you make an informed decision. If you can't find what you are looking for, our expert team is always ready to assist.

For a typical South African home you need to calculate your essential load: lights, fridge, TV, and gate motor typically total 3–5kVA. Add a security system and Wi-Fi router and you rarely exceed 6kVA. A 6kVA or 8kVA single-phase generator covers most homes comfortably, while larger homes with air conditioning or multiple geysers may need 10–15kVA. Bundu Power can help size your system — contact us for a free load assessment.

Prime power (kVA Prime) is the continuous output a generator can deliver for an unlimited number of hours with a variable load — typically used when the generator is the primary power source. Standby power (kVA Standby) is the maximum output available for short periods during a power outage, usually rated 10% higher than prime. For load-shedding backup, use the standby rating. For off-grid or prime power applications, always size to the prime kVA rating.

Runtime depends on tank size and load. As a rule of thumb, a diesel generator consumes approximately 0.25–0.35 litres of fuel per kVA per hour at 75% load. A 10kVA generator at 75% load uses roughly 2.5–3.5L/hour. With a standard 25-litre tank, that gives you 7–10 hours of runtime. Bundu Power generators are available with tanks ranging from 25L to 220L depending on the model.

Diesel generators require regular servicing to stay reliable. Key intervals: change the engine oil and oil filter every 250 hours or annually (whichever comes first), replace the air filter every 500 hours, check and replace the fuel filter every 500 hours, inspect the coolant level and battery monthly, and test run the generator under load for at least 30 minutes every 2 weeks if it is used as backup only. Bundu Power stocks genuine spare parts and can assist with scheduled servicing.

Yes. Most hybrid solar inverters — including brands like Victron, Sunsynk, and Deye — have a dedicated generator input. The generator provides AC power to the inverter, which charges the batteries and powers loads simultaneously. It is important to size the generator correctly: the inverter's charger draws power aggressively, so the generator kVA rating should exceed the inverter's maximum charge current plus connected loads. Bundu Power can advise on the correct sizing for your specific inverter model.

Single phase generators output 230V on one circuit and are suitable for residential use and small businesses running standard appliances. Three phase generators output 400V across three circuits and are required for large industrial motors, three-phase pumps, and heavy commercial equipment. If your DB board has a three-phase supply from Eskom, you will need a three-phase generator to back up all circuits. Single phase generators can still run a three-phase building by powering selected single-phase circuits via a manual changeover.

Yes. Bundu Power generators come with a manufacturer's warranty, typically 12 months or 1000 hours (whichever comes first) on the engine and alternator. Warranty terms vary by model — confirm the specific warranty period on the product page or contact our sales team. Warranty is subject to regular maintenance being performed at the specified intervals with genuine parts, and excludes damage caused by incorrect installation, contaminated fuel, or overloading.
